4 OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY

UK retail industry has been growing and experiencing revolutionary changes over the past few years at a remarkable pace. According to Hart et al., (2007), retail industry has become one of the highly manpower intensive industries that comprises the largest sector of the private economy in the UK. Like all service sector organizations HR management is one of the pillars of success of retail industry to maintain operational smoothness and consistent service to the customers. In retail sector, proper manpower planning, recruitment, motivation and retention are very essential. In retail sectors the pattern of work requires long hours of work by the employees leading to more fatigue and less motivation. In the present market scenario, many retail companies are struggling to overcome the situation by taking up many motivational initiatives. The companies have realized that effective retail store management depends on motivated, satisfied and loyal employees who will be productive, maintain work schedules, and develop tenure with the firm. The concept of motivation is a complex one to understand. However, in this present study, an attempt has been made to extract the key motivators that impact the employees towards organizational commitment in a UK retail sector. Keywords: Motivation, Dimensions of Motivation, Organizational Commitment, Retail Sector
